Lowell (born Elizabeth Lowell Boland) has won Billboard Canada’s very first Non-Performing Songwriter Award, presented by SOCAN. This groundbreaking accolade celebrates the exceptional talent and contributions of professional Canadian songwriters whose behind-the-scenes efforts craft some of the world’s biggest hits. The winner was announced on Sunday, June 2, 2024, during Canadian Music Week, at Billboard Canada’s Power Players event – where the first Canadian Power Players list was celebrated, and included SOCAN CEO, Jennifer Brown.

“The Billboard Canada Non-Performing Songwriter Award represents a significant milestone recognizing the invaluable role of songwriters, and their substantial contributions to the industry. Though they craft songs in the background, they deserve notable recognition in the foreground,” said Cameron Kennedy, Vice President of Creative and Member Relations, SOCAN. “We want to extend a huge congratulations to Lowell for being the first recipient of this award. Also, we couldn’t be prouder of SOCAN’s inclusion at this country-first celebration, and having our very own CEO Jennifer Brown included on Canada’s first Power Players list.”

Lowell said, “I’m deeply grateful to receive this award, marking the first official recognition from my home country after a decade of success in the industry.” The singer-songwriter/producer is known for her collaborations with Beyoncé, Madison Beer, Charlie XCX, Tate McRae, Charlie Puth, The Beaches, Lennon Stella, Nessa Barrett, Hailee Steinfeld, bülow, LU KALA, Leah Kate, and many more. With two songs on Beyoncé’s critically acclaimed new album – the global smash hit “Texas Hold’em” and the single “Bodyguard” – Lowell has become a trusted collaborator of the legendary artist.

The award was introduced to recognize songwriters who exemplify excellence in their craft, and have made a significant impact writing for other artists. It amplifies unsung heroes in the music industry, recognizing their invaluable role in building the Canadian music landscape. These gifted individuals collaborate with performing artists to create powerful and memorable music, often without visibility to the public.

The Power Players list recognizes the most influential and innovative leaders shaping the Canadian music industry. Among the Top 10 is Jennifer Brown, CEO of SOCAN, whose exceptional contribution has solidified her position as an industry leader. The Power Players list was officially revealed on May 31st, providing a comprehensive overview of the individuals who are driving change and shaping the future of the Canadian music industry.
